Looking for some beautiful and unique places to propose?
It comes a time when you know it’s the right time to give one of the biggest – and most romantic – steps of your life: ask your soulmate to marry you. But, there’s a little bit of pressure around this magical moment, like finding the perfect ring, how and where you should do it. In the first two questions, I can’t help you, since it is something that must come from the heart – your heart. But I have some suggestions so you could find the perfect place to pop the question.
Since Valentine’s Day is just around the corner – and it is, after all, the most romantic day of the year – I’ll share with you some of my favourite suggestions of places to propose in Portugal.
The best places to propose in Portugal
#1. For a city wedding proposal
Portugal has incredible cities, full of history and culture, just like Lisbon and Porto. And, if you’re planning to be in one of them, believe me, you’ll find several places to propose to your soulmate.
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a place with a very romantic atmosphere that can inspire you to pop up the question. If you’re looking for a specific place to have all planned, I recommend the Terreiro do Paço – close to the river -, Miradouro Portas do Sol – where you can have an unbelievable view of the city and the river – and Alfama, with with its narrow streets and typically Portuguese tiles. In any of the locations, I advise you to propose at dawn, the light is incredible at this time of the day and you will manage not to have many people on the street.

Still in Lisbon, we’ve a little village called Sintra, and you can take my word, you’ll fall in love as soon as you visit it. You can take a day to visit it, and propose during this time. You have the old village, with fascinating historic buildings, or even the Pena National Palace, a historic palace that will inspire you for this magical moment.
But, if you’re planning to be in the North of the country, I can’t think of a better place to ask the most important question of your life than Porto. I may be suspicious, since it’s my hometown, but Porto has a unique vibe and atmosphere. Every corner is filled with history and unique details.
In the city, you can do it in Ribeira, a place near the river or you can do it on the other shore, like in Jardim do Morro or Cais de Gaia, with an incredible view to the city. Since these places are very close to the river, the best time of day to propose is at sunset. At dawn it is very likely that there will be thick fog and that it will not be possible to see the city. If you want to do it on the beach or by the sea, there’s Foz do Douro, a lovely place to stroll around and full of romantic places.

#2. For the one who feel inspired by the sea
On the other hand, if you’re a beach lover and you’re thinking about places to propose with incredible beaches, don’t worry. I’ve got you covered! From North to South – and islands – Portugal has amazing and romantic coastal spots, with deserted beaches and the best sunsets.
I think Algarve needs no introduction – this is a must-have place to visit during a summer vacation. The white sand beaches and clear blue water are the perfect plan for the hot season, but even during the winter, this area is a lovely place to visit – and even to propose. You can pop the question in the Senhora da Rocha beach, the Benagil cave, or in the Cape Saint Vincent, in Sagres.
In the capital, we’ve a village called Cascais – the premier holiday destination of the Lisbon coastline. This traditional and charming fish town has lovely beaches where you can ask your soulmate to marry you. In Sintra there is another special place for those who love the sea, Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Portugal and where you can find a lighthouse and large cliffs overlooking the sea.

And, if you’re thinking about visiting the Portugal islands, I must tell you that Madeira is where you can find a unique combination of Nature, black sand beaches, good weather and amazing food. Your difficulty will be choosing the spot, you can believe me!
#3. For a calm and inspiring proposal in the Nature
If you’re reading this blog post looking for some inspiration of places to propose in Portugal surrounded by the peace and tranquillity of Nature, this last topic is for you. If there’s something my country has is a lot of natural spaces where you can get lost in the moment and enjoy some quality time with the ones you love the most.
But let’s talk about the reason you’re reading this: you want to find out what are the best places to propose with Nature. So, I’ll share one of my favourites: Gerês. This village is a well kept secret in the Northern of Portugal. Here you’ll find incredible waterfalls, beautiful viewpoints, and ancient villages.
And, if in the previous topic I refer to Madeira island as a place with incredible beaches, Azores, the other Portuguese archipelago, is the perfect choice for those who love Nature. If you don’t take my word, just do a quick search on Google images. This region is composed of nine islands, all of them beautiful! While visiting these islands, you can take a walk and discover some of the majestic lagoons, dive in the natural pools, and even go for a boat ride where you can see dolphins. Looks like the perfect plan to pop the question, right?
And that’s it! These are some of my all-time favourite locations in Portugal where I think you can find the perfect places to propose. I think more important than choosing a beautiful spot, is that you choose a place that is meaningful for both of you. Are you ready to put a ring on it? ✨
